In 1095, in Burgundy, on the eve of the first crusade, the Christian West is carried by an unprecedented wave of faith. Joachim de Saint Ange is a young monk copyist of the priory of Beaulieu, which depends on the powerful abbey of Cluny.
While he dreams of traveling the world and accompanying his master Odon in search of ancient manuscripts, his noble origins destine him - against his will - to an ecclesiastical career in the service of Pope Urban II.
From the greatest abbey in the Christian world to the sordid jails of Macon, caught between his love for the daughter of a lord and the most important armed operation of his time, Joachim will try to escape his destiny. Will he succeed?
